At the heart of Anton Smit’s work lies a profound exploration of the human spirit. Known for sculptures that navigate the complex landscapes of reconciliation, glory, and suffering, Smit’s latest series – Tornado and Whirlwind – offers a poignant visual metaphor for our modern world.

Whether rendered in large-scale public installations or intimate gallery pieces, these bronze works serve as a force of nature, pulling the viewer into a deep conversation about what it means to be part of a whole.

The Power of the “Tornado”

The Tornado series features a recurring theme of overlapping hands that form a seamless, dynamic circle. These sculptures are not merely static objects; they are rhythmic compositions that speak to the interconnectedness of all life.

The title itself – Tornado – suggests a powerful, swirling energy. However, unlike the destructive force of a storm, these sculptures represent a constructive gathering of strength. It is only through the contribution of every hand that the circle is made whole.

“I have always believed that art should be a conversation. These sculptures are meant to be hypnotic, drawing the viewer in to ponder the fact that we are but one of many. It is a reminder that only together can we continue to thrive.”

A Message for Trying Times

The symbolism of the Tornado series is particularly resonant today. In an era where global conflict often highlights our differences, these overlapping hands point toward our similarities. This message of unity extends beyond human relationships; it carries over to the bond between different species and the vital connection between humanity and the environment.

The stunning simplicity of the bronze forms masks a complex truth: our survival depends on the strength of our connections.

Experience the Collection

While Anton Smit’s public sculptures can be viewed across the landscapes of Cape Town and Pretoria, as well as in prestigious international exhibitions, the definitive experience of his work is found at the Anton Smit Sculpture Park.

Located just an hour outside of Johannesburg, this unique outdoor gallery was established by Smit in 2003. Spread over two and a half acres, the park houses his studio, an art gallery, and an art café, allowing visitors to see how these powerful works – like the Green Speckles Tornado – interact with the natural world around them.

Through these “whirlwinds” of bronze, we are invited to stop, reflect, and recognize the hands that hold our world together.

Explore the website or get in touch for any enquiries.
